Roulette Odds and Systems

Roulette is simple and transparent, which makes it a good game to understand the house edge. The wheel you choose matters more than any system.

European vs American roulette

WheelPocketsHouse edgeAvg. loss per $100
European (single zero)372.70%$2.70
French with la partage on even-money bets371.35%$1.35
American (zero and double zero)385.26%$5.26
American five-number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3)387.89%$7.89

The zero is the casino's edge: a winning straight-up bet pays 35 to 1, but the true odds are 36 to 1 on a European wheel. Always pick single-zero tables.

Every bet has the same edge

On a European wheel, red/black, dozens, splits and single numbers all carry 2.70%. Choosing a bet changes how often you win and how much, not how much you lose on average.

Why betting systems don't work

The Martingale doubles your stake after every loss. Starting at $5 on red, seven losses in a row means your eighth bet is $640 and you've lost $635 to win $5. Seven reds-missed in a row happens about once every 100 sequences on a European wheel, and table limits stop the doubling anyway.

Losses in a rowNext betTotal lost so far
1$10$5
3$40$35
5$160$155
7$640$635
9$2,560$2,555

Fibonacci, D'Alembert and Labouchère reshape the risk in the same way: many small wins, then an occasional large loss. None changes the 2.70%.

Smart roulette play

  • Play single-zero or French tables.
  • Set a fixed stake per spin and a session budget.
  • Remember that auto-play and fast lightning variants spend your budget faster.
